Lymphedema: What you should know...
Lymphedema is the swelling of the body that occur when the normal functioning of the lymphatic system is compromised. It can occur as a result of a birth defect, from the loss or altered funtion of the lymph nodes or vessels after surgery, radiation, trauma or infection and with other conditions causing the venous system to be compromised. Untreated lymphedema can be chronic and progressive.
Lymphedema usually manifests as a severe swelling of an arm or leg. For patients who have developed lymphedema as complication of cancer treatment, the swelling is almost always on the same side as the treatment. In sone cases lymphedema may involve both of the limbs. The swelling commonly extends from the arm or the leg into the fingers or toes. In the early stages of lymphedema the swelling is soft.
